The Switchback aims to fill a major gap in the EV market: consumers who want the practicality of a pickup, the comfort of an SUV, and the eco-conscious benefits of an electric drivetrain — but without the high cost barrier. Equipped with a 65 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the Switchback offers a real-world range of up to 260 miles per charge. For customers who need more endurance, an extended-range model with an 85 kWh battery (offering up to 330 miles) is planned for release in mid-2026.


Charging is convenient, too. With standard Level 2 charging, users can expect a full charge in 7–8 hours. Fast-charging capability (DC up to 100 kW) allows the battery to reach 80% in about 35 minutes — making it viable for road trips and long commutes.


Tech and Features Without the Fluff


Inside, the Switchback balances minimalism with tech-forward utility. A 12-inch central touchscreen runs SlateOS, the company’s custom lightweight operating system designed to optimize battery usage and drive efficiency. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air updates.


Driver-assistance features such as lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot detection come standard, with optional add-ons including a 360-degree camera system and an off-road driving mode. The cabin materials are vegan and recyclable, aligning with Slate Auto’s sustainability-first philosophy.


Designed with Urban and Rural Users in Mind


Slate Auto took a user-centric approach when developing the Switchback. Many urban users want the utility of a pickup truck but rarely need it on a daily basis. The modular design solves this by letting drivers switch configurations based on their weekly needs. Similarly, rural drivers — especially those in farming or trade professions — benefit from the cargo capability without having to buy a full-size gas truck.


The compact dimensions (around 15 feet long) make the vehicle maneuverable in tight city streets, while its high ground clearance and rugged suspension also allow for mild off-road use. It’s a jack-of-all-trades vehicle — and that’s exactly the point.


Sustainability at Its Core


Beyond affordability and flexibility, the Switchback also prioritizes sustainability. The manufacturing process involves low-emission assembly lines and recycled materials for non-structural parts. Its battery is cobalt-free, making it less harmful to source and recycle.


Slate Auto has also committed to a battery buy-back program, where used battery packs can be returned for credit toward a new vehicle or reused in stationary energy storage.


The Road Ahead for Slate Auto


The Slate Switchback is currently available for pre-order in select U.S. states, with deliveries set to begin in Q1 2026. Global expansion, including markets in South America, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe, is already in the planning phase.
