On June 5, 2025, OpenAI published its latest “Disrupting malicious uses of AI” report, describing ten notable campaigns disrupted in just three months. These campaigns originated from at least six countries, including China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cambodia, and the Philippines. The most common abuses were:

Deceptive hiring schemes from North Korea: automating rĂŠsumĂŠ generation and recruiting third-party “laptop farms” to mask foreign IPs   .

Malware campaigns, such as Russia’s “ScopeCreep,” where ChatGPT aided in writing Windows malware and command-and-control infrastructure  .

Influence operations, like China-origin “Sneer Review,” “VAGue Focus,” and “Helgoland Bite,” generating political content in multiple languages to sway opinion or collect intelligence.

🧠 China

Four of the ten disrupted campaigns had likely links to China.


“Sneer Review”: flooding social media (TikTok, X) with pro-China posts and comments.

“Uncle Spam”: planting opposing views on U.S. policies, including tariffs and USAID, to incite division.


“VAGue Focus”: posing as European influencers or news analysts to harvest intelligence like classified documents, promising high pay.



One operation even used ChatGPT to design logos supporting fake U.S. veteran groups  . In all cases, OpenAI banned accounts and issued intelligence alerts to platforms like Meta. China’s embassy in Washington dismissed the allegations calling for “sufficient evidence.”



🇷🇺 Russia

“Helgoland Bite”: Russian-speaking actors used ChatGPT for German-language political content, profiling activists, and targeting cyber operations ahead of Germany’s 2025 election.


“ScopeCreep”: a malware campaign where ChatGPT assisted in writing, refining, and obfuscating malicious Windows code and setting up botnet infrastructure.



🇰🇵 North Korea

A recurring deceptive employment scam involving AI-generated rĂŠsumĂŠs and overseas contractors managing on‑loan laptops to hijack corporate systems remotely.


These campaigns suggest escalating sophistication—closing a feedback loop where AI tools assist at every stage.

OpenAI also traced activity to Iranian-affiliated groups (like Mint Sandstorm / Charming Kitten) using ChatGPT for phishing campaigns and vulnerability research.

Cambodia: “Wrong Number” SMS scams disguised as high-pay offers.

Philippines: comment-spam recruited via bogus job postings and ChatGPT translation of targeted messages.
